Well known catholic priest in Haiti, died after being shot several times during robbery

Father Joseph Simoly, well known in the Catholic community, was attacked yesterday,  by three armed individuals riding a motorcycle on Routes Frères (Pétion-Ville town) not far from his home. Rushed to the Haitian Community Hospital (HCH), the victim, who received several bullets, did not survive his injuries.

According to the national police, Father Joseph Simoly had just made a transaction in a commercial bank before being the target of these three armed individuals who would have had time to grab the wallet of the victim.

On social networks, many people mourn the departure of Father Simoly who was 54 years old. Former Youth and Sports Minister Jimmy Albert, a member of the Catholic Church, expressed his sadness on his Facebook page. "A brother friend has just fallen under the bullets of two [three according to the police] murderers. Father Joseph Simoly left prematurely Thursday, December 21, 2017 leaving behind torrents of tears, a church and a mourning that will take a long time to fill," one can read. "The team Solèy Lafwa bows to the remains of this zealous Minister of God, this crazy lover of the Virgin and this outstanding animator so loved by the people of God. "

Father Joseph Simoly, known for his public speaking, was one of the celebrants of the novena of the Immaculate Conception, held in Port-au-Prince from November 30 to December 8, 2017. And according to one source, the victim was celebrating a Mass a few hours before his death. Death was at the center of his sermons.

According to the Justice and Peace Episcopal Commission (Jilap), 330 people, including 15 police officers, were shot dead in 2017 in the metropolitan area. Father Joseph Simoly has just lengthened the fatal list.
