The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, today expressed deep concern over the apparent inability of the Haitian parliamentarians to meet in the National Assembly to decide on the best way to ensuring institutional stability and encourage further election process.

"Given the importance of the serious challenges and risks to the stability of the country, it is particularly disturbing that the meeting of the National Assembly scheduled for yesterday, 14 July, has been canceled, again due to a failure to achieve a quorum."

"Haiti can not afford to be held hostage to delaying tactics and other stratagems. The situation is critical. It's time to make a decision that should have been done long ago, "added the Secretary General.

"It is imperative that Haitian political actors, including parliamentarians and those temporarily governing the country, to fully assume their responsibilities towards the nation. The interests of the Haitian people should supercede partisan interests. Every effort should be taken for the presidential, parliamentary and local elections to be held without delay and in a calm atmosphere, "he concluded.
