The President of the Republic, Jovenel Moïse, returned to Haiti this Sunday after a stay in Italy where he met with Pope Francis at the Vatican. The head of state took stock of his trip during a press briefing at the diplomatic lounge of Toussaint Louverture International Airport.
According to the tenant of the national palace, his meeting with the Pope was one of the greatest meetings he has held since his inauguration on February 7, 2017. "You have to know what it means to go meet the pope. He is not an ordinary person like us all. However, I discovered that Pope Francis knows all the miseries and pains that the world is going through," he said.
Jovenel Moses said he had discussed several topics with the Holy Father, including his visit to Haiti. "The last visit of a Pope to Haiti dates back to March 1983. I asked that Haiti could receive the great visit of Pope Francis. We worked on the date but we have not yet reached an agreement. The authorities of the Catholic Church in Haiti will have talks with the Vatican authorities to announce the date to us shortly. This will allow us to prepare accordingly, " he detailed, recalling that the Vatican State was one of the first to recognize the independence of Haiti in 1824.
With the head of the Catholic Church, Jovenel Moise said he also spoke about the problems of Haitian youth. "We have a young population. This is an opportunity that must be well managed so that it serves as a lever for the development of the country. We have emphasized the integration of youth, how to moralize and put it at the service of the nation, "he said.
After meeting with Pope Francis, Jovenel Moses said he also met his Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella, in the afternoon of Friday, January 26. "It was a great meeting. Bilateral relations had been discussed, including the need for the opening of the Italian embassy in Haiti after more than 30 years. I told the Italian president that in our bilateral relationship, the most important is technical cooperation aimed at development, " he said, stressing the need to benefit from the expertise of the Italians, particularly in the construction of turbines hydroelectric projects in Haiti. With his Italian counterpart, Jovenel Moïse also addressed the issue of tourism. "The biggest tour operators in the world are in Italy. With the new momentum we are giving to tourism in Haiti, we are going to need these actors to bring European tourists here, "he explains. The two Presidents agreed on the formation of a joint commission that will work on the development of tourism, agriculture and energy.
On the evening of Friday, the head of state met the Haitian community living in Italy. He says he was surprised to see how Haitians learn about everything that happens in Haiti. However, the President did not indicate whether he also met with the President of the Council of Ministers, Paolo Gentiloni Silveri, the Director General of the World Food Program (WFP) and the Director General of the Agricultural Development Fund (IFAD) as was announced in his diary.
