Haiti was one of the 35 countries which abstained Thursday, from voting on a UN resolution calling on the United States to drop its recognition of Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel and, rejecting any future designation of Jerusalem as such. The non-binding resolution was overwhelmingly passed by a vote of 128-9

Trump had threatened to cut off financial aid to countries that voted in favor, and it seemed to have had an impact on countries such as Haiti, one of Washington's largest aid recipients. Haiti also did not want to vote in favor of another resolution with strong backing of the US, as It did at the OAS special session earlier in March, on the Venezuelan crisis, despite a similar threat by President Trump and Senator Marco Rubio.

“The United States will remember this day when it was singled out for attack in the General Assembly,” Haley said at the U.N. podium ahead of the vote. “We will remember it when so many countries come calling on us, as they often do, to pay even more. This vote will be remembered.”

The UN vote came after earlier this month, Trump reversed decades of U.S. policy by announcing the United States recognized Jerusalem - home to major Muslim, Jewish and Christian holy sites - as the capital of Israel and would move its embassy there.
