The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Ecuador (Arcotel) has published a notice on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 in which it warns users of mobile phones in the country that fraudulent calls from Haiti with the prefix +509 have been received by a number of users recently.

The agency noted that this practice is called "Wangiri" and is performed with the use of telecommunications infrastructure located abroad.

Autodiallers are used to make many short calls, mainly to mobile devices, leaving a missed call number that is either a premium rate or contains commercials, in the hope that the victim will call back.

It can cause considerable economic damage to the user who returns the missed call without knowing that it is an international number, since the amount is billed or deducted from the balance of his phone plan. Arcotel warns users in Ecuador that they should not under any circumstances return calls from numbers +509 and avoid damage.
