The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) described Friday as "racist" alleged statements by US President Donald Trump, who said that immigrants from Africa and Haiti came from "shit holes"

Trump questioned on Thursday why the United States would like to receive immigrants from Haiti and African nations, referring to some as "shit hole countries," according to two sources familiar with White House comments.

"These are shocking and shameful comments from the president of the United States," said OHCHR spokesman Rupert Colville during a press conference in Geneva. "There is no other word that can be used but a racist one."

"You can not disqualify countries and entire continents as" countries of shit ", whose entire population, which is not white, and therefore are not welcome," Colville added.

In November, the Trump government decided to end the status for immigrants from Haiti and Nicaragua. It gave until July 2019 for approximately 59,000 Haitian immigrants who had been given the status to return to their country or legalize their presence in the United States. He gave the Nicaraguans until January 2019.

According to Colville, Trump's reported comment could endanger lives by potentially fanning xenophobia: “It legitimizes the targeting of people based on who they are.”

“This isn’t just a story about vulgar language, it’s about opening the door to humanity’s worst side,” he said.

Colville says Trump’s reported comments “go against the universal values the world has been striving so hard to establish since World War II and the Holocaust.”
